Cats

We recommend both male and female cats are neutered at 6 months of age, though it may be performed slightly earlier if needed.

Dogs

Male dogs are castrated from 6 months of age (small breeds) or from 9 months for larger breeds. Female dogs are spayed either at 6 months of age or approximately 3 months after a season. Spaying at 6 months, prior to the first season, will dramatically reduce the risk of mammary cancer later in life, though some benefit will still be achieved if spaying is performed before 3 years of age.

Rabbits

Rabbits can be neutered from 3-4 months of age. Ovarian cancer is known to be very common in older female rabbits and as spaying involves removal of both ovaries as well as the uterus this will be prevented.

About the procedure

Prior to booking the operation we usually arrange a preoperative consultation to ensure your pet is ready and healthy enough for the neutering and discuss any questions you may have about the procedure. This is free of charge.

Animals are admitted between 8:00am - 9:00am on the day of their operation and we aim to get them home in the early afternoon, although they may be collected anytime up until closing time if more convenient for you. When your pet is admitted a sedative is given to keep him/her calm and relaxed during their stay, as well as pain relief and antibiotics.

Dogs may need sutures to be removed 7-10 days after the operation. Male cats do not have sutures and female cats and rabbits have dissolvable sutures placed under the skin.
